VISITORS ENTERTAINED. ’COMPLIMENTARY SMOKE CONCERT. Visiting bowlers were the guests at a complimentary smoke concert held at the Kawaroa Bungalow last night. There was an attendance of about 150, over which Mr. J. D. Sole (president of the Taranaki Centre) presided. The toast list was interspersed with many enjoyable musical and elocutionary items, and a pleasant time syas spent by the gathering. The toast of “The Visitors’’ was proposed by the chairman, who expressed the thanks of the centre -for the way the outside clubs had rallied round the tournament. He remarked that the gathering depended very largely on the patronage they received from other parts, and it was very gratifying to see so many outside representatives. Next year he hoped to see all of them back with all their friends. Looking through the li»t, he noticed that their Wanga-
| nui friends had rolled up in force, and ■I he hoped the Taranaki bowlers would I reciprocate. Taihape had again sent a team, and Masterton and HunterviUe rinks were also in the competition. I The toast was coupled with the names of Messrs. J. Nixon (president of the ' Wanganui Centre), and W. H. Fookes (Taihape), both of whom returned | thanks. Mr. Nixon remarked that I there were other Wanganui bowlers who would have liked to visit the Taranaki tournament, but found it inconve1 nient to attend. He announced that i Wanganui was holding an open tournament at Easter. Mr. Fookes forecasted ' that next year at least'four teams from I Taihape would be found amongst the entrants. “The Dominion Bowling Association” was proposed by Mr. George Gorden (Wanganui). He remarked on the importance which this body was attorning, as it now controlled about 13,000 bowlers. Those who travelled on the last trip to England, he said, realised the importance of bowling, and the necessity of having strong men to control its affairs.
Mr. A. K. Smart, North Island representative on the Dominion Council, replied to the toast. In proposing the toast of “The Taranaki Centre.” Mr. Chapman (Masterton), complimented this body on the manner in which they were conducting the tournament, and the president (Mr. Sole) for his courtesy to visitors. The secretaries to the tournament (Mesars. Moore and Hill) hud also given the visitors much assistance. Tn announcing that Masterton intended to conduct a tournament at New Year, Mr. Chapman said they hoped, to see some Tara'naki visitors. He remarked that it was the interchange of visits which had done j so much to foster bowling. The chairman replied to the toast of the Taranaki Centre, and referred the growth of bowling in the province.
Other toasts included “The Ladiea,” proposed by Mr. H. E. Fookes, who referred to the great help clubs received from lady workers in the course of the various inter-club matches and tournaments. Items were contributed by Messrs. B. Hartman, W. Hay, A. L. North, A. Brooker, F. Hooker, W. P. Okay, and A. K Maodonald.
