NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire. —Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Racing began with the Jumpers’ Flat. Wamba rushed to the front when the barrier rose, and along the back his nearest attendants were Pariform and Sir Roseberry. Hyttus was well back and" not going well. Wamba led into the straight, but a couple of furlongs from home he was being ridden. Explorer on the rails and Sir Roseberry on the outer challenged, and in a good finish Sir Roseberry won by a neck from Explorer, who was a length and a half in front of Wamba. Royal Gift was fourth and Hyttus finished at the tail of the field.
Great interest was taken in the meeting of The Hawk, Thespian and Solfanello inthe Waterloo Plate. For such a small field it was a great betting race. The start was a good one, and The Hawk soon shot out in front. With a couple of furlongs gone he was in front on the rails. Thespian was on the outside and Solfanello in behind. Racing on to the course proper The Hawk was still in the van, but Thespian was close up, and had every chance if he had been good enough. Below the distance The Hawk drew away, and over the last bit be was going easily. The Hawk passed the post two lengths ahead of Thespian and Solfaqello was four lengths behind Thespian. The official timekeeper gave the time as Imin 9 4-ssec —an Australasian- record.
The scratching of Bumptious from the Hopeful Stakes resulted in Mountain Lion being fancied. The only others well supported were The Emperor and April Folly. The Shag got the worst of the start, but the others went away well together. April Folly came on to the course proper in the lead, and two furlongs from home she was showing out well clear of Mountain Lion. The latter finished well, however, and got up to win by half a length. The Emperor was two lengths away third and Deroulede was fourth.
Triboulet was the only scratching from the Melrose Handicap, in which Bodyguard, Wheatfield and Whipping Boy were fancied. Helen Rufus led at the start, but at the six furlong post Bodyguard went to the front. Rounding the top bend he was still in command, with All Cerise and Whipping Boy well up, and Wheatfield a good wayback. Bodyguard was first to start for home, and in the straight Whipping Boy threw out a strong challenge. Bodyguard stayed on well enough, however, to win by half a length. Redlogue was two lengths away third and Blissfulness was fourth. All Cerise fell when passing the judge’s box, and his rider had a narrow escape from serious injury.
Affectation was backed for the Summer Handicap as though the race was over, and Vespucci and Mustard Pot were next i i demand. Kinsem began best, but was headed off by Songbird, who took the lead at the six-furlong post. Affectation was well up, but Listowel got chopped out. Songbird had a break of five lengths as they came across the top. Kinsem was lying second, and several lengths back came Affectation. Songbird swung into the straight with a good lead and Kinsem went out after him. Pursuit looked hopeless for any of the others. Kinsem gradually wore Songbird down, and the pair crossed the line together. The judge’s verdict was in favor of Songbird by half a head. Printemps finished well and cut affectation out of third money.
Egotism was the choice for the Consolation Handicap, and she was very unlucky not to win. Turning out of the straight the leaders were Paoanui and Sycorax, and at the mile Martial Dawn led Sycorax, Paoanui and Egotism. Going along the back Egotism lost her position and went right back to last place. At the six-furlong post Silent King and Bagdad were the leaders, and Halifax and Crucelle were well placed. Egotism was making up lost ground well. Silent King took charge at the bottom of the straight, and a little later Sycorax showed up. Crucelle and Princess Pat came on the scene and a good
finish ensued. Crucelle got the verdict by a neck from Princess Pat. Egotism was a couple of lengths away third, and Sycorax was next to finish.
Anomaly and Blackmail carried the bulk of the money staked on the City Handicap. Quest and Anomaly began well. Anomaly was in charge as they came on to the course proper. Birkie and Celmisia threw out challenges, but they had' no chance with the top-weight, who cleared out from the field and won easing up by two and a half lengths. Celmisia was second, just ahead of Mantua and Birkie.
Chant Royal was selected to win the last event of the meeting, but after leading to the distance he was soundly beaten. The consistent Passionless won well, and Dissertation and Triboulet filled the minor places.

(By “Moturoa.”) Weights, for the Egmont meeting are due to-day, and acceptances close on Saturday evening. There will be racing at Takapuna and at Pahiatua on Saturday, and again at Takapuna on Monday. If Festivity is anything like himself the big race at Pahiatua looks all over. Waimatao reads as well as anything in the sprint. Track form pointed to Insurrection doing big things at the Wellington meet-
ing, and the Kilbroney gelding’s victories were flawless.
The Blenheim trainer, A. Lore, led in five, winners at the Foxton meeting, four <of which landed on the second day. Old Detroit pulled up very lame after contesting the Foxton Cup, and Fibre was another one that did not relish the hard going. Ngata scored comfortably in the Foxton Cup, and was in the market again on the second day, but the lightweights made the pace very torrid and he had to carry his 10.1 all the way, with the result that lie could . only get second money.
Thespian’s fine form at Trentham invests his meeting with Gloaming in w.f.a. events at the Egmont and Taranaki meetings with unusual interest. Gloaming may prove the better of the pair, but he will have to gallop for the money this year.
Bairnsdale showed a bit of pace in the Hurdles on .the first day at Foxton. and was a strong tip on Monday. Although several appeared to be put to
“assist” him he was done with three furlongs from home. As anticipated, Rio Alto made amends for his defeat at Awapuni by running off with the President’s Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Tuesday.
The best dividend returned at Foxton was that of Satin in the Maiden on Monday. The three-year-old daughter of Sarto and Ladine came along on the outer at the finish and appeared to catch Pleasure's rider napping. The winner carried a trifle over forty tickets, of which the owner held ten. A nice win!
Waimatao was not asked to gallop when he won the Anniversary Handicap at Foxton, and on the second day odds were again wagered on him in the Wharangi Handicap. He waited on the field to the bend, where the leaders ran out a bit, and just as Bert Morris was swerving the old fellow into the gap (which spelt victory) a stirrup leather broke, and Morris hit Mother Earth (which spelt defeat). It was “stiff” luck.
Muraahi was pulled out of the Hack Welter at Foxton on Monday, and produced in the Apprentice’s Hack Handicap, in which little W. Pine had a comfortable ride. Mystico, who drew the rails, led out of the straight and to the five furlongs peg, where the Hawera horse (Muraahi) assumed command, and never gave anything else a chance afterwards. The favorite, La Paloma, was as sore as 'fifty-nine boils (an an abcess thrown in), and never threatened danger.
Petunia, by • Absurd—Bronze, is well enough bred to win anything, but his three starts at Eoxton resulted in two seconds and a third. The writer was not enomoured of the way* he was ridden—with all due respects to S. Anderson.
Simon should have won the Moutoa Walter Handicap, but he didn’t. L. Morris allowed the Waverley gelding to tail right off in the middle stages of the race, and it is safe to say that he stood up Barleycorn and Moutoa J vanova a dozen lengths over the last three furlongs, and a length past the post was in front. This is a matter of fact — -unbiassed, because the writer backed Moutoa Ivanova—and Harold Raynor has our sympathy. Moutoa Ivanova performed shockingly on the first day at Foxton, but in the President's Handicap she was caught in' a galloping humor, and, clearing out half a mile from home, won anyhow. Produced again in the concluding event, she was in front three furlongs from home, but Mcßrearty let Barleycorn up on the inside, and in the race to the post the ground lost through an error of riding was never regained, and the Blenheim gelding won 6y a head. With the majority of the leading riders engaged at Trentham it was not surprising Co see wretched race riding at Foxton, and the new stipendiary, Mr. A. P. Wilson, gave a number a proper shaking up. The majority of so called jockeys should be had up for taking money under false pretences. Kilrush had- been galloping well prior to the Foxton meeting, and was well backed each day, but the hard and slippery going did not suit him. Nevertheless, he shaped well enough to suggest that he will reward Harold Brown for his patience very soon. Deucalion stuck a very poor crowd of hack sprinters at the meeting, and won e on the bit each day. All things considrrecT lie paid a good “price” on Monday.
Rowan made his debut as a hurdler at Foxton, and great race, bidding kept him on the outside of the field all the way, and at the finish he was going as strongly as anything—close up third. Rowan carried just over twenty tickets on the machine, and as far as the owner was concerned, ran unbacked. With a vigorous horseman on board he would have won and paid a “stunning” dividend. One of these days Rowan will win, and the price will be about "thirty bob.” Such is racing!
One of the best looking horses the writer saw at Foxton was Hukaroa, by Daunt out of a Handsome Jack mare. He is a nice chesnut, and resembles Acre in build. Being only a five-year-old he ma-y come good. “Josh,” Prosser puss the polish ou him. Some Red, a three-year-old gelding by All Red—Musketry mare, trained by Tom Coleman at Marton, paid a great second dividend on the first day at Foxton, but was knocked out by the effort, and ran unplaced in the Maiden on the second day. Some Red is' useful, but is not nearly ready yet. Rada Was very unlucky, and with better handling could have won either day. Being bv Hallowmas —Ukraine she is beautifully bred, and Albert Jackson has her in the pink of condition. The first time she lias\a horseman aboard she will carrv my ‘dollar.” Tommy Rot has quickly repaid Mr. J. J. Corry for the £l5O he paid for him. Thouo-h a bad winded horse he can muster up a lot of pace for live furlongs, and under good conditions' can run a good “six.” He should win again shortly.
Glycerine Mop> Fluid has no equal for removing dust, dirt and grease from furniture, linos., enamelled, painted or varnished surfaces. Brightens everything it touches, will not fasten dust, keeps dusters and mops clean. Sharland’s Tomato Sauce makes a good addition to Soups and Gravies. It makes them richer and more appeTHE WORLD’S RESTORATIVE. Dr. Joseph James. D.Sc., F.R.S.L., M.P.S., IS Wilton Place, London, Eng., writes:—“lt is a pleasure to me to recommend such an excellent remedy as Dr. Cassell's Tablets, not only in brain fag and similar conditions resulting from overwork, worry or nervous strain, but also in digestive weakness.” Prices in New Zealand, 1/9 and 4/-., all chemists and stores. v 3.
