Mr. H. J. Thornton, secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, vacates his position at the end of this week to take up the secretaryship of the Nelson Board. At yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Board, reference was made to Mr. Thornton’s departure, by the chairman (Mr. P. J. H. White), who expressed regret at their secretary’s departure, stating that he was of opinion that out of the many who applied for* the position last year they had made an exceptionally fortunate choice in Mr. Thornton. This had been amply confirmed since he had taken over Mr. White assured Mr. Thornton that he would carry .with him the good wishes of all the board in his new sphere, and they would follow with pleasure any future success that came his way. Other speakers were Messrs. H. Trimble, A. Lees, and R. J. Deare, and it was resolved to record on the minutes the board’s appreciation of the services of the departing officer. In the course of his reply, Mr. Thornton paid a tribute to the efficiency of the board’s staff, and. expressed deep regret at severing connection with the members of both the office and building departments. Opportunity was taken to welcome Mr. H. W. Insult, who succeeds to the position, and the chairman referred to the ability Mr. InsulV had already shown as a servant of the board ifi his position at the Stratford District High School, and later as organising teacher in the Ohura district. >
