THE RAILWAY BREAK.
BRIDGE NEARLY READY
LSE AT END OF
(By Wire. —Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night.
Mr. R. Masters (Stratford) asked iff the House of Representatives to-day when the Railway Department expected to complete the reinstatement of the Whenuakura bridge. He had read in the newspapers that the trains were not likely to run through from Wellington to New Plymouth for three weeks yet.
Mr. Masters proceeded to suggest that the department should make Better arrangements for the conveyance of passengers and their luggage between Patea and Waverley. The department ought to take responsibility for the transfer of luggage; passengers were being embarrassed a great deal under present conditions. The Minister for Railways (Mr, Guthrie) assured the House that his department was doing everything possible to meet the difficulty caused by the wrecking of the bridge. The de-
partment had informed him that day that the resumption of through traffic would not be possible before the end of this week. The temporary bridge would be ready at the end of the week. He had already inquired, at the suggestion of Mt. Masters, if the department could make arrangements for the transport of luggage across the break, but had not yet received a reply. The Minister added that the department was doing its best and he deprecated the extravagant statements that ' had been made by some critics of the department.
