Orders for papers may also be left with thecn Jan. 23. At the recent outbreak of fire at the council yards it is reported there was a disagreement between the deputyMayor, Or. C. Jackson, and Superintendent Grubb, of the fire brigade. The fire brigade held a meeting to consider ■the matter last week, and as the result of a resolution which was passed in committee it is understood that the brigade will take further action. Cr. Jackson is at present on holiday in New Plymouth. It is estimated that about five hundred people visited Ngaere Gardens yesterday, when a very enjoyable programme of music was given by the 4th Battalion Wellington Regimental Band, and but Jor the very dull weather conditions there would doubtless have been a much larger crowd. The band stopped in Stratford for a time on its way to the gardens and played at the Stratford hospital. The music was greatly appreciated by the patients, and morning tea was supplied by the matron of the hospital.
The subscription list at present open at the Borough Council office for the New Zealand women’s wedding gift to Princess Mary will close on February 11.
