ANZAC DAY.

TO BE OBSERVED AS SUNDAY. BILL PASSED BY HOUSE. ‘ 1 By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A motion that the Anzac Day Amendment Bill, which provides for Anzac Day to be kept as a Sunday, be committed was moved in House to-night. Mr. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo) de scribed the commemorative service helc at Anzac Cove beach last year, and h* said that if that respect was shown for death at Anzac he thought the Government was justified in endeavoring to have the day duly solemnised here in New Zealand. When the Bill went into committee Mr. R. McCallum (Wairau) said he thought the Bill did not go far enough; it should be compulsory on the part of all churches to hold services on that day. The Hon. W. D. Stewart said the Bill in its present form met the views of the Returned Soldiers* Association, and he thought it went far enough. Mr. G. Mitchell (Wellington South) congratulated the Minister on bringing down the Bill, which he thought wouh. be approved by the country. Mr. McCallum contended that unless Anzao Day was made a church-going day the Bill would simply make the position ridiculous. Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston North) supported the Bill as it stood, but as Anzac Day this year conflicted aomewhat with the municipal elections he suggested the elections should be put ahead a week. Mr. W. A. Veitch (Wanganui) asked that if Anzac Day was made a Sunday the rights of working men under Arbitration Court awards should be protected.* -4 Mr. J. Edie (Bruoe) thought the workmen of the Dominion would not expect to be paid if Anzac Day was made a Sunday. The Minister, in reply, said he would look into the question of the municipal elections and endeavor to avoid any clashing. . The Bill was read a third time and passed.
