Insurrection beat Egotism by a head. Esperance was fourth. Rouen was in a good position but fell. Time, 2min. 31sec.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

GREAT CONTEST FOR CUP. (From Our Special Reporter.) Wellington, Jan. 21. The opening event of the day was the Jumpers’ Flat. Wamba led at the start from Hyttus and Royal Gift, with Sir Roseberry next and Explorer well back. Wamba led into the straight, but Hyttus was going very easily, and below the distance took charge and went on to win by a lenegth and a half from Sir Roseberry, who finished well under pressure, but had no chance with the winner. Wamba was another couple of lengths back third, a head in front of Royal Gift. Explorer finished sixth, and will do better at the meeting. Lady Witchet was left at the barrier. Ares was withdrawn from the 4Fitzherbert Handicap in favour or The Itrnperor, and Boughal was also scratched. Slayer got the worst of the start, and The Emperor was one of the first to show out, and he was one of;the leaders turning for home, where several had chances. Coming on to the course proper Killashandra ran right across the. track. Morose challenged The Emperor inside the distance, but could only get to within a length from the leader, who won very nicely. Hula Girl was a close third, and Killashandra came again and finished fourth. Slayer ran very green, and finished last.

In the Apprentices’ Plate, Triboulet led at the start and was never headed. The Reaver, who was running fourth, just behind Liquer and Bodyguard, got through on the rails at the home turn, but could make no impression on Triboulet and over the last bit faded, and Scion and Bodyguard, both of whom were a little unlucky, beat him. Triboulet won by half a length, and a length separated the second and third. Pam and Whipping Boy finished well up. When the field was released for the Anniversary Handicap Songbird went to the front, and Martian Miss was well up. Six furlongs from home Gamboola improved his position. Songbird was the first to turn for home, and he led to within a few lengths of the post, where The Speaker cut him out and won by a head. Halifax was right up third, and the next to finish were Bagdad and Makere. Halifax should have won easily.

The Cup was a great race all the way. The field stood very well at the barrier and was dispatched to an even start. Callaghan, who had drawn the rails, Askari, and Paonui were the first to break the line, and passing the judge’s hpx Callaghan was in charge •from Paonui, Winning Hit, and Trespass, who were just ahead of a bunched field,’ of which Bengeroop was the last. Sycorax went round the field as they turned out of the straight, but covered a lot of ground without gaining much. At the mile Callaghan was still in front, with Trespass and Red Bob right at hand, Winning Hit being in fourth position and Egotism moving up. Along the back stretch Winning Hit and Egotism both improved their positions, and were within easy reach of the leaders. Six furlongs from home Callaghan was still the pilot of the field, and Red Bob. Winning Hit and Trespass were just in behind. Winning Hit was quickly finished with. Sycorax was leading at the distance, but there Egotism shot out, and later Insurrection, finishing very fast, shot up and won by a neck, with Egotism a head in front of Sycorax l . Esperance made up a lot of ground in the straight. Rouen fell in the straight. Only three started in the Wellington Stakes. Thespian was a shade in front of Farceur approaching the course proper, but there was little difference as they turned for home, but in the | straight Thespian went away from the 1 two-year-old and won by a couple of i lengths. ; A good start was effected in the ! Telegraph Handicap, but with two fur- ! longs gone Blackmail was in front with Solfanello handy and Astinome in the

rear. The Hawk came through on the rails at the bend on to the course proper, and in the run home was not headed, winning by two lengths from Solfanello, who beat Blackmail by half a length. Mantua was fourth. The last race saw a good finish between Passionless and Lady Kotiripo, the former getting the verdict. Mereusonta was a good third and All Cerise fourth.

FOXTON MEETING.

FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. • Foxton, Jan. 21. There was ideal weather for the opening of the Foxton annual meeting. There was a fair attendance, and the track was in good order. The totalisator handled £18,410, as compared with £36,536 for the first day of last vear, a decrease of £18,126. ‘Results:— POROUTAWHAO HACK HURDLES. One mile and three-quarters.—Pariform (McSeveneyj 1, Opiate 2, Battlesong 3. Also started: Temaire, Fibre, Bairnsdale, Oak Rose, Pittsworth, Teipei, Hukaroa, Rowan. Won by a length, a head between second and third. Time, 3min. 17sec.

HIMATANGI HACK. Six furlongs.— Princess Fran (L. G. Morris) 1, Petunia 2, In the Pink 3. Also started: Correspondent, Ania, Lord Usk, Fera, Bayana, Golden Foam, Second Choice. Won by half a length, the same distance between second and third. Time, Imin. 16 2-ssec.

TURF TOPICS. (By ‘‘Moturoa.”) Concluding day at Foxton. Wellington to-day and Wednesday. Egotism should be worth following now. Ngata was backed for a ton of money on Saturday. If track gallops count for anything Pam should win a race shortly. Weights for the Egmont R.C. summer meeting are due on Thursday next. Arthur Olliver has reduced his weight considerably, and is giving up training and taking on the more remunerative business of riding. The Egmont Racing Club is to be commended on its decision to reinstate the ten shillings totalisator. Though not a remunerative move for the club, it is a graceful acknowledgement of the piessing needs of the present day army of semi-impoverished punters. Boomerday, who won £lBBO in stakes at the A.R.C. summer meeting, appears t® be leniently treated in the Takapuna Cup, and with J. O’Shea in the saddle should just about start favorite.

The Foxton meeting attracted a good crowd of Wanganui’s consistent race followers on Saturday, but few Rangitikei sports made the trip. Harvesting operations are in full swing there, and. money is too “tight” for betting nowadays.

Funny, isn’t it, to hear some people’s chatter at the trots? At Awapuni the other day just prior to the first harness event several drivers, clad in everyday garments “on the top storey,” and weariugxthe orthodox long white pants “in

the basement,” were congregated in the birdcage. “Look,” screamed one lady, “Look at the cricketers. Wonder where they’re playing to-day?” A contemporary states that Egmont Park, who has won £1425 in stakes this season, had only to pass the vet. to be sold 'for £4OO some months ago. “Hoop Iron” is a lucky man. It was quite on the cards that Charles Jenkins would have been granted a conditional license in time to have ridden Detroit at Foxton, but last week’s meeting of the Wanganui District Committee lapsed through want of a quorum. The application will be considered next month.

To the average follower of the gallopers the superabundance of hobbles, pads, boots, etc., carried by pacers almost causes derision—but there are exceptions. Struck Brown leaving the “First horse” pay window after Waitipoto had won the Awapuni Handicap. “Strike that?” I asked. “You bet 1 did,” he replied, with a smile. “Who gave you the wheeze?” I inquired. “Nobody,” came the reply. “I just picked out the horse with the most gear on him, and I thought if he was worthloading up with all that stuff he was worth a bet—and he landed.”

Rational’s sister, Veil, is reported to have grown into a rather mean looking filly, and disappointed those who expected her to come to hand early. Possibly the Sydney trip took too much out of her. At all events Mr. G. D, Greenwood must have often regretted turning down that offer of 3000 guineas from an Australian sportsman.

Although tote figures are down in the majority of peaces the increased percentage ‘W* ia red” 'by the Government places, i> ie ] a f,ter on a footing equal to i£ "not better than —that o-f last year. At the recent Auckland racing carnival the gallops produced a S against £25,753 last year, and tjyj> trots £16,556, as against £9459 and the trots £16,556, as against £9459. There is something in being a successful jockey these days. The principal sums paid away to horsemen at the Auckland R.C. summer meeting were: A G. Dixon (apprentice) £271 J Os; A. Reed £229 10s; H. Fewer New Zealanders than usual figure in the big races at the Australian •LC. autumn meeting. Gloaming, Pluto, Egotism, and Solfanello figure in the Doncaster Handicap H (one mile), and Egotism and Pluto in the Sydney Cup (two miles).
