Weights will be declared about Friday, February 3, and close o>i Saturday, February 4. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Wellington Cup to-day. Foxton to-day and Monday. Ngata will be “warm” in the Foxton Cup.

Farceur looks like beating Rational in the Wellington Stakes. Ou Marton running Demoness should go well in the Foxton Maiden.

Detroit has been very sore lately, but the sandy track at Foxton may assist him.

If Winning Hit is really off color the Wellington Cup may be lifted by one of the lightweights—possibly Insurrection or Red Bob.

The Absurd gelding Wamba won a mile and a quarter race with 8.11 in 2.12 ar Hastings recently, and will keep Explorer busy in the Jumpers’ Flat at Trentham.

Speculation on the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham has taken a wide range, but Kinsem and Mustard Pot appear likely to beat more than beat tlic-m.

Opiate has been knocking at the door in a lot of hurdle races lately, and Fibre appears to be his toughest opponent at Foxton. Marqueteur’s brother, Mark Time, has been acquitting himself well on the tracks lately, and he should win a race soon—preferably over six or seven furlongs.

Heard at a trotting meeting recently: Disgusted female: “Oh, dash these ‘red hots.’ You’re sure to lose if you can’t find out what’s ‘trumps.’ Give me the gallops every time.” When sizing up the minor two-year-old handicaps at Trentham it would be as well as to remember that the Duncar. bracelet. Ares and The Emperor, can go very fast, and may beat the rest for condition.

Dainty Step, Raceful, Borealis and Songbird will all carry big money in the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington, but on Feilding and Stratford running Amber Tips appears to be worthy of respect. Ttiboulet, after consistently gaining place money at Awapuni, went on and won a double in such taking style at Marton that even the blind man with the organ could see that he was some class, and it is quite on the cards that he will get amongst the winners again before the Wellington meeting is oyer. The sprinters, in the open events at Foxton are not a particularly brilliant lot, and it would occasion little surprise if the rejuvenated Waimatao cleaned ’em al) up.

Con. Reid will ride A. McAuley’s team —Kilrush, Ruatara, Spook and Deucalion—at Fox'ton. They should earn expenses.

The heavyweight brigade have had little io do with the settlement of the Wellington Cup in recent years. In fact, since Achilles won fifteen years ago with 9.4 no horse has scored with more than 8.7. and the average winning weight has been under 7.9.

Died in ’Stralia recently, Prince Foote, winner of the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbys and St. Legers, Melbourne Cup, etc., and sire of Richmond Main. Prince Viridis. Pelaw Main, and others. Prince Foote broke a blood-vessel.

A fair attendance, good fields, and keenly contested racing were the features of the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting on Wednesday, but speculation was poor, the crowd being mainly composed of “new chums” who didn’t know enough about the game,to work up any enthusiasm.

The writer noticed a good number of Taranaki trotting enthusiasts amongst the spectators, and few of them wore smiles when our old friend Prinzora returned a limit dividend in the Cup. Mr. J. R. Corrigan patronised the gathering freely, but a second was all that came his way. Tn one race he started three horses, so he was encouraging sport with a vengeance. Of his team that raced at Awapuni Rio Alto

appears to be the best to follow at Wei li rigton.

H. Barraclough had Ramaroa in pretty good fettle at Awapuni, and the gelding ran two good races. Ramaroa was always prominent in the Cup, but the distance beat him, and he finished fourth. Pulled out again in the Awapuni Handicap (saddle) he chased Waitipopo closely from bell to finish, only going under by half a length after a stirring struggle. Although the track was in fair order at Aw’apuni it seemed to stop the backmarkers, and though Harry Audubon, Taraire, and Jimmy Richmond all made up a lot of ground in their races they found the handicaps too great. Possibly the trio wfill shape better on a smoother track.

A Palmerston scribe shook Mr. J. E. Henrys up about the Wellington handicaps this w r eek, and the veteran handicapper was greatly amused when he read the tirade. Really, somebody ought to tell the scribe that “Bert” Coyle was responsible for those weights—but whisper it gently. Pam is reported to be on the upgrade lately, and she certainly boat all but Whiritas in the Trial Hack Race at Marton. George Price expects to win a race w r ith her at Trentham.

Amongst the jockeys likely to be seen in the saddle at the Wellington meeting will be K. Hawkins, a Tasmanian rider, who has obtained a license here.

The Dunedin trainer C. Gieseler had bad luck with his team for Trentham. During the passage on the ferry boat tw’o of his charges. Bonnie Maid and Twinkle, got loose, and were so badly injured that their chances of starting at the meeting w'ere rendered nil, and they were shipped home again. Amongst the runners at Trentham will be an Australian-bred pair, Sussex (Varco —Dirge) and Royal Fancy (Bernard —Royal Match), both owned by Mr. H. Philcox. Both are maidens, and have shown no form yet.

Mennin is reported to b.e galloping In good style at Caulfield. Amongst his ’Stralian engagements are the V.R.CSt Leger, and I the Newmarket Handicap. If the New Zealander regained his two-year-old smartness it would take some weight to stop him in tne nig sprint at IJlemington. Gloaming’s record to date reads: —39 starts, 34 firsts, 4 seconds, once unplaced. Stakes won £24.283—a good return •for a 250 guineas outlay. Racing' engagements reported in the Wellington Cup include: Rouen (A. Olliver). Rude (M. McCarten), Winning Hit (H Young), Vespucci (G. Young), Egotism (A. Reed), Esperance (A. Dixon), Insurrection (H. Wiggins), Palestrina (C. Emerson), Paoanui (H. Griffiths), and Sycorax |H. Dunn).
