Mr. N. McCartney,, Inspector for the Royal Insurance Company for Wellington and Taranaki, has been appointed manager for the Wellington branch of the Sun Insurance Office.

Captain Frank Hudson, formerly in charge of the Defence Office at Hawera, and Airs. Hudson left New Zealand by the Maheno yesterday for England, via Australia.

The Australian cricketer, Mr. C. G. Macartney, was married to Miss Annie Bruce, 8.A., headmistress, of the Fort Street High School at Chatswood, N.S.W., during the last week in December.

Mr. Louis Philip Hayman, a departmental manager with Messrs. P. Hayman and Co., died suddenly in a Wellington shop last evening. He had been under medical treatment.—Press Assn.

Nurse Gwen Pellew arrived in Wellington by the Rimutaka on Tuesday, and reached New Plymouth last evening, on a visit to her partnts, Mr. and Mrs. W Pellew. Nurse Pellew has been absent in the Old Country for the past eighteen months. Applications from Misses Nellie .Sang* ster, Beaconsfield Road, Stratford, and Evelyn E. Wood, Hill Street, Wanganui, to he placed on the list of probationers, were approved at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board.

Mr. John Southey, who died at Queenstown on Friday after a paralytic stroke, was home director of the China Inland Mission. He was formerly an Anglican clergyman, then a missionary in China till lie was invalided.

A London cable announces the death of Mr. John Donovan, formerly a member of the House of Commons for West Wicklaw. In 1906 and 1912 the late Mr. Donovan visited Australia and New Zealand as envoy of the Irish Party. Mr. Donovan married an Auckland lady in 1915.

The death has been announced at. Thames, of Mr. <J. B. Laurenson, a brother of the late Mr. George Laurenson, M.P. Air. Laurenson was prominent in industrial circles, and was president of the Canterbury Industrial Association from 1913 to 1916. He was Mayor of Sumner for the period 1915-1917. On the death of his brother, he unsuccessfully contested the Lyttelton seat.

The resignation of Nurse V. C. Stanton as theatre sister was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board. Nurse Stanton intimated that she had accepted a position in the Gisborne Hospital. Other resignations were those of Nurse Salway, ward sister, who is taking up private nursing in the Auckland district, and Nurse M. J. Merron.

Mr. B. S. Knox, of Christchurch, a member of the Dominion Executive of the Royal Life Saving Society, who has been on a visit to New Plymouth conducting examinations leaves to-day for South Taranaki. In conversation with a Daily News representative yesterday Air. Knox expressed keen appreciation of the courtesy and attention received from officials of the centre, particularly Messrs. A. R. Standish (chairman) and F. J. Eggleton (secretary).

The death occurred at New Plymouth on Tuesday night of Airs. T. W. MoEwen, at the age of 76 years. Mrs. McEwen, with her came to New Zealand about 31 years ago, when they settled .on a farm on the Carrington Road, moving into New Plymouth about 10 years ago. Mrs. McEwen is survived by her husband (Air. T. W. McEwen). 7 sons and 1 daughter (Mrs. H. W. Young, New Plymouth). One son was killed at Messinas in the late wav, and one died in New Plymouth some time ago.

A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr’ Walter Bewley was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital‘Board. In speaking to the motion, the chairman (Air. Al. Fraser) said Air. Bewley had been a good citizen, and had taken a prominent part in public affairs for the last thirty years. He had sat with the late Mr. Bewley on public bodies, and there was no doubt he was a good citizen, and his death caused a loss to the town.

Members of the New Plymouth hospital staff were very successful in recent examinations. Reporting to yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board, the medical superintendent (Dr. E. A. Walker) stated: —Misses Smith, Collins, Smart, Fairbrother. Merron and Evans were successful in passing the State examination. “I am proud to say,” the superintendent added, “that the two first-named, with Nurse Wilson. of Christchurch Hospital, heade<l the list for New Zealand. The result is equally creditable to the nurses themselves and to Dr. Wade, their teacher, and to the matron and Dr. Leatham, who devoted much time to coaching. Incidentally it is a proof of the soundness of the New Plymouth Hospital as a training school.” A telegraphic message, received from the Minister of Public Health, the Hon. C. J. Parr, read: “I desire to congratulate your board and the nurses of your hospital on the examination list.” On the motion of Aljessrs. M. Fraser (chairman) and J. R. Sutherland, the board passed a resolution congratulating the nurses and staff, the mover remarking that it was a big achievement on the part of the candidates who topped the list.
