FIRE ON A STEAMER.
ELEVEN LIVES LOST. TERRIBLE SCENE ON BOARD. BRAVERY OF RESCUERS. By Tale£raph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 17, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 16. The German steamer Vesta caught fire off Lowestoft. A trawler took off ten of the crew, ]t>ut ten others and the mate’s wife were lost.
The Vista was carrying a cargo of benzol, which shifted during a gale, and the barrels knocking together caused an explosion. The crew were in a desperate plight, as the flames spread, and some of the crew were forced overboard by the burning deck. All the boats were burnt, but the trawler’s crew, with conspicuous courage, came alongside and saved the rest. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
