AMERICAN PROHIBITION RESULTS. < By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, Jan. 14. The Prohibition Bureau summary for 1921 shows that the arrests for drunkenness decreased by 60 per cent. Nine hundred and fifty-six thousand gallons of liquor were seized and 30,000 criminal prosecutions were begun, resulting in 20,000 convictions. It is announced that Mr. Hays, Post-master-General and chairman of the National Republican Committee, who was responsible for President Harding’s election, is shortly resigning from the Cabinet to take a position as head of the National Association of Motion Picture Producers and Distributers. “MADE IN GERMANY.” London, Jan. 15. The Aberdeen granite merchants are notifying a reduction in wages owing to the slackness of trade. They state that English cities are importing tombstones and war memorials made in Germany from Scandinavian granite.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. PEERS SAVING THEIR ESTATES. London, Jan. 15. The Weekly Despatch states that owing to the ’ crippling taxation several Dukes and other Peers are turning themselves as landlords into limited liability companies in order to save family estates from the auctioneer. The landowner owns the bulk of the shares in the company, and distributes the rest among the children and family dependents. interest upon which equals the pi esent allowances.—United Service.
