PERSONAL.

Mr. W. H. Murray, schoolmaster, of Pukerimu, is spending a fortnight in New Plymouth.

Mr. J. S. Fox was at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Roaivi re-appointed chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. Fox' briefly returned thanks.

A telegram from Wellington reports the death of Mr. Arthur T. Bate, a well known stock and sharebroker, and formerly prominent in cricket and football circles. He had been in ill-health, for a considerable time.

The deaths are recorded of two old M'nnganul residents in the persons ot Mr. Henry Earle, aged 84 years, and Mr James Thain, aged 73 years.

A London cable announces the death of Sir John Kirk, who accompanied Livingstone’s African expedition as medical officer and naturalists. He was in liis ninetieth year. Driver J. Gould, after having been 31 years in the railway service, of which nearly 20 years were spent at Hawera. has resigned from the service and is taking up farming on Waihi Road. On Saturday the Hawera railway staff met Mr. Gould, who was presented, on their behalf, by Mr. R. McNeill, with an inscribed, oak tray of handsome design.

A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. Walter Bewley was passed at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Board. In proposing the vote the chairman (Mr. J. S. Fox) mentioned that the late Mr. Bewley had been a member of the board for a number of years and was later secretary. Members stood in respect to the memory of the deceased gentleman. A letter expressing the board’s sympathy will be sent to Mrs. Bewley.

Mr. Charles Suttie, well knjwn ifi Manawatu in connection with the flax industry, the patent Suttie’s flaxwashing machine, and other inventions, died near Dargavjlle last week. Deceased was interested in, the gum industry in the Dargaville district, and had invented a patent plant for gumwashing, which was running successfully at one of the biggest gum-washing mills in the district, from which big results were expected.
