GOVERNMENT RETRENCHMENT.
TEACHERS WILL BE AFFECTED. By Telegraph.*—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 14. To date, the teachers have been left' in doirbt as to what will be their fate with regard to the general retrenchment proposals. All they have learned was from a remark by the Minister of Education before Christmai. They were not' referred to in the statement made by the Prime Minister; that, in fact, the Cabinet had not then considered the ' point. Now, however. Cabinet has con- * sidered the matter definitely, with the result that the teachers will have to bear their share of the burden of the day. The reduction will be on a different basis to the reductions in other departments of the public service. It is authoritatively stated it will be equal to the actual reduction in the cost of living since the bonus w’as given to the teachers. The percentage of such reduction will be based on the Government Statistician’s figures.
