AN OWNER'S APPEAL. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association an appeal of T. H. Ivey, owner of Wild Thyme, against the disqualification of that horse by the Gore Trotting Club for inconsistent running at the club’s meeting on Boxing Day- was considered. It was decided to refer the case back to the club with additional evidence supplied by tfie appellant, and to inform the club that in the opinion of the board the evidence disclosed was insufficient to support the charge of intentional inconsistent running. TURF TOPICS. (By ‘‘Moturoa.’’) Wellington races this day week. Foxton acceptances close on Monday. Maniahera is being treated to a short spell. Amythas is reported to be standing up to* light work at Ricearton. Spook, who won a hurdle race at Marton.’ is well treated at Foxton. Namur took a drop too much —down a well —the other day. Finish! Vagabond is all to pieces at present, and badly requires a spell. Detroit has been troubled with shoulder soreness since racing at Marton. Moorland, who is now’ owned by Mr. G. Rutherford, is being trained by E. Scoullar.

Ngata looks the pick of the Foxton Cup Handicap, but in his absence the veteran Detroit should go very well.

The increased taxes op racing men threaten to make the game not worth following, and many small owners will turn it up this winter. . . Deucalion is nicely weighted in the Himitangi Hack Handicap at Foxton, and should get round those tricky turns as smartly as anything in the race. Opiate, by all Black—Dreamer, is a useful hurdler, and well placed he

shouldj soon win a race. Opiate changed hands recently, and will next race in Mr. H. P. Blundell’s colors.

Sycorax may not be quite class enough for a Wellington Cup, but her form at the holiday meetings encourages one to tick her off to run well in distance events at Trentham.

Passing through Fordell this week the writer was amused to see chalked on a horse box on the siding a lifesized cow, of atrocious conformation, and labelled “Isabel.” Those who lost their coin on the Fordell mare at Marton will appreciate the joke. The suspensions of H. Goldfinch and R. Reed have expired, and both will be available for forthcoming meetings. Reed was going strongly when he struck trouble, but. he should quickly make up for lost time when he gets going again. A Manawatu scribe reports that when D. McCauley’s stables were destroyed by fire at Foxton this week the racehorses Moutoa Ivanova and Penalty had a narrow’ escape of being burned alive. Fortunately they were removed in time.

Sydney papers report the death of the crack horseman, Joe Gallagher, who rode hundreds of winners in New Zealand and in ’Stralia twenty yehrs ago. Gallagher rode principally for Messrs. A. N. and L. D. Nathan, and for Tom Morrin, all of Auckland.

The Wanganui District Committee, in reviewing punishment meted out to the ’Stralian jockey. C. Stephens,_ increased the term of his suspension from three to six months. Stephens is a capable light-weight horseman, but he takes too many risks for the safety of racing. Amongst the Awapuni horses likely to race at Foxton are March On, Te Pei, War Baby, Lord Usk. Sling Camp, Satin. Bonnie Briar, Pantier, Submerge and Rowan. Horses likely to go to Trentham are Redlogue. Birkie, Passionless, Railand and April Folly. It is stated that this year Mr. G. M. Currie, of the Koatanui Stud, Wanganui, intends to send the yearling batch of Absurds to Sydney for sale (says a writer in the Napier Telegraph). If he does there will have to be some coin floating around if the record he put up last year at Wanganui ‘is to be headed off. for, in February of last year, he submitted 11 yearlings by the Englishbred sire which averaged a fraction over 888gns apiece, six of them bringing 677ogns, the “Flying Filly” Epitaph topping the list at 1500gns. Zany (the full sister to Thespian) coming next at IGOOgns, eolt out of Bronze 1175 gns, Farceur, Veil and the full sister to Mermin (since dead) lOOgns each. At a committee meeting of the Egmont Racing Club held on Thursday evening, it w’as decided to reinstate the 10s totalisator for the forthcoming meeting. As far as the lawn is concerned this will be a new departure. Owing to recent judicial decision determining the responsibilities of racing clubs it was also decided to close the cloak rooms.

A first-class three-year-old is likely to be a source of great profit in Sydney and Melbourne next spring (remarks the Sydney Referee). The A.J.C. Derby carries £7OOO added money, the Victoria Derby £3OOO, and the Melbourne Cup £lO,OOO. As of comparatively recent years Poseidon, Prince Foote and Patrohas each brought off that treble, a similar performance is far from impossible. There is stated to be a probability of Mr. G. M. Currie giving Thespian an opportunity of earning distinction in Australia when the autumn meetings come round (says the Auckland Herald sporting editor)’. Ranking, as the son of Absurd does, as a record-breaker over a mile, the bay colt is sure of a strong advertisement should he be set to measure strides with the Australian cracks when the All Aged Stakes comes up for decision at Rand wick. Lord Glanely, who did so remarkably well with his horses in England in 1919, winning £35,fi54 10s in stakes, has not fared well 'since, notwithstanding lhe gave high prices for yearlings in 1919 and 19‘V Last year he was a long way down the list of winning owners, and it is much the same this time. Up to the end of October the two-year-old Blue Ensign (by The Tetrarch —Blue Tit), for whom he ’gave. 14,500gns as a yearling, had not even started.

“Have Australian Horses Deteriorated?” is the heading of an article in the London Sportsman from the pen of “The Special Commissioner,’’ who proceeded thus: —“I certainly think they bred better horses in Australia and New Zealand 20 or even 30 years ago than they do now, when they have vitiated their stock by importations of cheap and often unsound stallions who could boast of nothing but a specious pedigree. No one would expect nowadays to import Australasian-bred horses to emulate the deals of Merman. Maluma, Mons Meg, Newhaven, Australian Star, The Grafter. Moifaa, and others that might be named. On the contrary, quite second-class racehorses go out from here and carry all before them at the. antipodes.” THE TURF IN RUSSIA. The horses are whizzing around the race tracks of Russia once again. But not on an elaborate scale. Just a few months ago, in Moscow, a race track which had not been in operation since the war began was reopened for use by harness horses. The card of six contests daily is attracting increasing crowds, but it has been noticed that the bulk of the throng is made up of poorly dressed, shabby persons who seem to be out of work and seek the race track as a means of recrea-

tion. , , mi • ' The admission is 10,000 roubles. This sounds like a lot of money. But it reppresents aproximately ten cents in American coin. There are no pari-mutuel machines, but a certain amount of private wagering is carried on. One story is told oi a Russian who went to the track with a sufficient number of roubles to approximate 5 dollars in American money. He bumped into a very lucky strike and won close to 200 dollars on the day. His winnings in Russian money approximated around 2,000,000 roubles, and he had to hire a truck to help him cart home his fortune. Mr. P. J. Kelleher, Inspector of lotalisators in New Zealand, recently issued his third annual report. The total number of races run by Totalisator clubs in 1920-21 was 2271, and racing clubs paid in stakes £485,170, and trotting clubs £125,505, making a total or £610.075, as compared with £502,22i> tor the previous year, and £983,070 for the year before that. The average stake per race given by racing and linnt clubs; was £2(19.09. and by trotting clubs £2OSJU as compared with £229.58 and £201.7 < respectively the previous year. In addition to the above figures, racing and hunt clubs gave cups, bracelets, P'd™etc., to the value of £2157 16s, and trotting clubs £075. The 1 per cent tax paid to the Government on stakes amounted to £OlO6 100.
