At the wool sales 12,764 bales were catalogued, of which 3728 were New Zealand. There was an excellent selection of all sorts. There was a crowded attendance and excited bidding. English buyers were the chief operators, and France and Germany took a fair quantity. Evidently the market is in the midst of a covering movement which is forcing prices to a level that many consider unduly high in view of the state of the woollen industry. Best merinos are 15 per cent, above December closing rates; average sorts 10 per cent.; crossbreds 10 to 15 per cent.; low crossbreds and slipes practically un-changed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., have received the following cable from their London office under date 10 :—“Wool sales opened. Compared with closing preceding series, merino and fine crossbred 10 to 15 per cent.; medium crossbred 10, and coarse crossbred 5 per cent, sellers’ favor, good competition.” THE WHEAT MARKET. London, Jan. 10. The cargo market is easier in view of lower Argentine and American quotations, which are 3d to 6d lower. Australian parcels firm: Arrived 31s 3d, afloat 51s fid.
