The origin of the outbreak is a mystery. FREEZING WORKERS’ AWARD. Napier, Jan. 11. Mr. M. J. Reardon, secretary of the Freezing Workers’ Union, says certain ,delegates at the meat pool conference in Wellington suggest that Parliament should interfere with the freezing workers’ award. Mr. Reardon says they are laboring under a delusion, as the terms of the award cannot be altered for two years. But it is unfortunate for the workers in the industry that this is not so, for Mr. Justice Frazer has repeatedly stated that a variation can be made by the Arbitration Court, not only of the bonus, but also of the basic rate. THRESHING RATES. Christchurch, Jan. 11. A meeting of North Canterbury threshing mill owners was held for the purpose of considering whether it is possible to reduce threshing rates and thus afford relief to farmers. It was resolved that prices remain as at present with 10 per cent, discount, and that a halfpenny rebate be allowed on oats. With regard to hour-work the charges for wheat, barley, and linseed will be 50s, and grass. seed. 455. It was also decided to ask the Arbitration Court, in view of falling prices, to consider, in the interests of grain growers and machine owners, the bonus question.
