STATE EXPENDITURE.

PROTEST BY FARMERS’ UNION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Economy in the administration of Government departments was the subject of discussion at the meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to-day. The matter arose when a letter was read from the Auckland branch of the union stating that “the executive views with astonishment the fact that departmental expenditure is still increasing, and suggests that strong recommendations be made to the Government with a view to immediate retrenchment.” Some speakers referred to the need for the Government giving financial assistance to many firms threatened with collapse, and suggested that the Government be requested to raise a loan so that moneys could be advanced. Captain Colbeck (Auckland) said that from the figures it was evident retrenchment was now in progress. It was decided to reply that the executive will keep the matter of urging further economies steadily in view.
