Dr. Smuts is intervening in the coal strike and endeavoring to secure the re-opening of negotiations with a view to submitting the dispute to hrbitra- t tion. He insists that the Chamber of Mines must withdraw all its ultimatums. The Government is enforcing the mining regulations, consequently work in all the mines has been brought to a standstill.
