TRANSVAAL COAL STRIKE.
GENERAL STRIKE EXPECTED. By Telegraph.—Press Aun—Copyright. • Capetown, Jan. 5. It is anticipated that the ballot of unionists will result heavily in favor of a general strike. Police are being drafted to the coal strike area from all parts of South Africa. Dr. Smuts is intervening in the coal strike and endeavoring to secure the re-opening of negotiations with a view to submitting the dispute to hrbitra- t tion. He insists that the Chamber of Mines must withdraw all its ultimatums. The Government is enforcing the mining regulations, consequently work in all the mines has been brought to a standstill. The railwaymen have decided not to handle black coal, except on the main lines.
