.QUESTION OF ELECTION. POSITION DOUBTFUL, PARTIES ORGANISING. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 5, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 4. Sir George Younger, the head of the Unionist Party machine, startled the prophets of an election by declaring that the Coalition’s work would not be complete until it carried the - reform of the House of Lords, and that the moment was not opportune for this, in view of the fact that the campaign would interfere with commerce when the latter was just turning the corner. It is generally believed Mr. Lloyd George and the Coalition Liberals favor an early campaign on the Irish settlement, the Washington decisions, and the Geddes Committee’s economies, but over-pressure against the Unionists’ views would involve a serious risk of a Coalition split. Mr. Lloyd George’s decision is not expected before he returns from Cannes. Nevertheless, the Asquithites and Laborites are holding pre-campaign meetings. It Is regarded as significant that Sir Gordon Hewart and Mr. McCurdy secretly conferred with the Asquithite leaders at a dinner in Manchester. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
London, Jan. 4. Rumors regarding an impending general election include a statement in the Pall Mall Gazette that Mr. Churchill will become leader of the Coalition Liberals and Mr. Chamberlain leader of the Coalition Conservatives, Mr. Bonar Law accepting a comparatively minor position, under the Premiership of Mr. Lloyd George.
THE WOMEN’S VOTE. SIXTEEN WOMEN CANDIDATES. Received Jan. 5, 7.15 p.m. London, Jan. 4. In view of the prospect of a general election Lord Gladstone is taking charge of the election arrangements for the Asquithites, assisted by Sir Robert Hudson. The women’s vote is sure to play a larger part than in 19118. Already there are sixteen women candidates announced, comprising four Conservatives, six Asquithites and six Laborites.—Aus.N.Z.
