ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A LABORER’S SUICIDE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Masterton, Jan. 3. Daniel Murphy, aged 45, single, employed by a contractor, committed suicide by cutting his throat in a boardinghouse on Sunday. MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF. Auckland, Jan. 3. •Peter Smith, aged 32, committed suicide at Ellerslie by shooting himself through the mouth with a gun. At the inquest the coroner found a verdict to this effect. MAN JUMPS OVERBOARD. Dargaville, Jan. 3. An Austrian, named Baaich, jumped overboard from the deck of the steamer Tuiranga on the journey from Helens-'-ville to Dargaville when opposite Pou-" tu, last, night. Captain Vause. oh the alarm being given, put the ship about and succeeded in getting the man on board again. A boat also put out -from Poutu, but its services were’ not required. Basieh was handed over to his relatives, but will be dealt with by the police who have gone out to get him. A BATHER DROWNED. -s-b Auckland, Jan. 3. Alexander W. Thornely, aged 51, a resident of Avondale, was droiwned while surf bathing at Karokare. Hi» son Roger saw his father in difficulties from the oeach, and succeeded in getting him ashore. Artificial respiration for two hours proved unsuccessful.
