SCULLING.
THE WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Jan. 3. Arnst and Hadfield have done solid work during the week-end. Hadfield confined himself more to bursts over a mile, though he covered the full course at a good solid pace. Arnst continues to do the full distance twice daily at a pace which seems mechanically set. He does not vary in the slightest. So far as one can see he carries a watch in his boat, and uses it as a pacemaker.
FINAL PREPARATIONS.
Wanganui, Last Night,
Serious operations for the world’s sculling championship were brought to a close this afternoon. Arnst covered two and a half miles very strongly. He stopped for a few seconds after covering a mile in order to avoid a floating log, and then went on at a solid pace and finished really well. Hadfield also did 2i miles, but confined himself to a leisurely row. He is pronounced to be in tip-top condition. To-morrow he will be taken for a motor drive into the country by his supporters. Hadfield will row at about 12st Gib and Arnst at 13st 91b. Both parties are very confident, and if both men are fit and well an Herculean struggle is assured.
