The death is reported from Wanganui of the Rev. Worsley Thomson, at the age of 55 years. Mr. F. J. Lysnar, chairman of the Gisborne Harbor Board, who is visiting Taranaki, spent a day or two in New Plymouth. Captain Bone, superintendent for the New Zealand Shipping Company, is at present on a short visit to New Plymouth.
His Excellency the Governor-General has been informed that the degree of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor has been conferred by the President of France upon Major-General Sir Alfred Robin, K.C.M.G. A cable from Suva states that Mr. John Maynard Hedstrom, managing director of Morris, Hedstrom, Ltd., born in Fiji, has been created a Knight Bachelor.
A London cablegram reports the dea4h of Sir Thomas Sutherland, formerly chairman of the P. and 0. Company, aged 87 years. A London message states that Mr. O’Grady, M.P., has contracted smallpox. He has just returned from Russia, where he directed the International Trade Union relief work.
The London Daily News understands that the betrothal of the Prince of Wales is certain in 1922. Viscount Farquhar is vacating White Lodge, Richmond Park, for the Prince’s occupation. The deaths of four old identities in Auckland are recorded—Mr. John E. Taylor, aged 75, who had resided in the Mangere district for 41 years; Mr. James Slater, aged 88, “who helped in no small way to advance the growth of the city”: Mrs. Elizabeth Baker, aged 94; and Mrs. Ellen McHale, aged 87. Princess Mary’s wedding is fixed for Shrove Tuesday, February 28. It has been definitely decided that the bridesmaids to Princess Mary will be Princess Maud, daughter of Princess Victoria, Duchess of Fife, and Princess Maria of Roumania, grand-daughter of the Duke of Edinburgh, afterwards Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Sir Thomas Mackenzie, formerly High Commissioner for New Zealand, arrived in New Plymouth by motor-car last night on a short visit. He leaves tomorrow for Palmerston, and addresses a meeting of the Farmers’ Union at Dannevirke on Friday. Speaking to a Daily News reporter last night Sir Thomas said his future movements in New Zealand were quite indefinite at present.
