ENCOUNTER WITH FIREARMS.
CULPRIT ARRESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Dec. 3il. An encounter with, firearms took place at Ranfurly on Wednesday. Two farmers, George Deveney and William Griffin Dowling, occupy farms divided only by a road, and unpleasantness developed. It is alleged that Deveney, armed with a shotgun, went over to see Dowling, and as the latter came down the road towards him opened fire. Dowling ran away, and Daveney is alleged to have put another cartridge in his gun and again fired, missing Dowling and his son, who was near by. Constable Bandy witnessed the shooting, and fired a shot from his revolver over Deveney’s head as a caution, but the latter rs stated to have ignored the warning and fired a. third shot which narrowly missed Constable Bandy, who then fired low at Deveney. The bullet struck the ground at his feet, splashing dirt and sand in his face. Deveney. then dropped his gun and ran across a paddock. He was later arrested and brought to Dunedin last night on a charge of attempted murder.
