SEVERE GALE.
SWEEPS OVER BRITAIN. GREAT DAMAGE DONE. VESSELS IN DANGER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received January 1, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 30. A severe gale swept Britain to-day, causing dons-iderable damage, and is still raging to-night in South England. Heavy rain and melting snow caused floods and landslides, especially in Scotland. A ballast train ran into a landslide near Loch Treig, Invernessshire, and the engine and two wagons were pitched down an embankment, two men being injured.
An express train from Carlisle t , Edinburgh ran into a tree \|>lown across the line. The train kept the rails, though four of the engine’s wheels we r e torn from their sockets.
A house in Battersea collapsed, and two occupants were killed. Tugs towing the battleship Vengeance to Dover to be broken up, were compelled to abandon the task owing to the gale, and the Vengeance is' now adrift in ths Channel. SMALL VESSELS WRECKED. SOME LOSS OF LIFE. Received Jan. 2, 8.10 p.m. London, Jan. 2. The gale is causing numerous shipwrecks of small vessels} which occurred on the east and south-east coast with some loss of life. The Vengeance, with fourteen men on boards is still adrift, constituting a danger to shipping. Three tugs were sent out, but returned to port, failing to find her. She was last reported ten miles north of Cape Hague.
