WILD DISORDER.
VIOLENCE GRIPS NEW YORK. DEATHS. STABBING AND ROBBERY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—copyright. Received Jan. 2, 8.10 p.m. New York, Jan. 1. New York city is now recovering from one of the most disorderly New Year celebrations in its history. Despite the outwardly mild nature of the New Year’s Eve celebrations up to midnight and the comparatively small amount of drinking by public houses between midnight and five o’clock in the morning, ,there were marked and unparalleled incidents of viciousness and violence in every part of the city. Shootings and stabbings, and assaults with fists, revolver butts and empty whiskey bottles, and hold-up robberies and other crimes are reported. A remarkably large number of hood-' lums were observed in the early morning hours in important streets, including Fifth Avenue. There was a continual racket and disturbance by gangs of young toughs, rushing into the main avenues ‘from side streets and attacking inoffensive men and women. Five deaths are reported and at least sixteen stabbings; also countless cases of alcoholic poisoning.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
