CUSTOMS RETURNS.
DECREASE FOR PAST YEAR. NEW PLYMOUTH FIGURES. In the year just ended the sum of £67,155 I ls sd.was collected in Customs duty at New Plymouth. This represents a big falling off compared with 1920, when the amount was £102,423 Is 4d, but that year is generally regarded as being an abnormal one as regards trdde. The figures for 1921 more nearly approach the pre-war level, and are in advance of the total for any year up to 1914. The receipts from beer duty were less than in 1920 by over £5OO. Last month’s contribution to the total was £4016 5s in customs revenue, and £337 3s 7d in beer duty. The customs is considerably less thgn that collected in December of 1920, but there is an increase in the beer duty, which is due to the fact that the tariff is now Is per gallon instead of 6d.
