BOXING.

CARPENTIER v. COOK. i ‘ *A TERRIFIC AFFAIR.” By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Dec. 29. The newspapers are paying increasing attention to Carpentier’s and Cook’s training. The Evening News’ points out that, though Carpentier eased up over the holidays, Cook worked harder than ever. The fight will be a terrific affair. The critic adds: “It is significant that among real critics there are more takers than offers against Cook, discounting the suggestion that Dempsey permanently hurt Carpentier.”

He is of opinion that the Frenchman, though as good as ever, will not have an easy run. Cook is the fastest heavyweight seen in Britain for years. 'T believe he is too fast to make the most of his weight, to which is probably due his inability to knock out Curpehey or Goddard. Cook now claims that he has developed a punch without sacrificing speed. If this is true Carpentier will have a troublous time. The Frenchman has met many sorts of boxers in his career, but never a tougher or gamer opponent than the unassuming Cook.” STRATFORD TOURNAMENT. The principals in the boxing tournament at Stratford on race night are due to arrive in Stratford to-day.', f Charlie Cann, under the charge or Tom Souter, arrives by motor from Wanganui.
