OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Business on Christmas Eve was brisk. A very large crowd o‘f people were in Opunake, and, as usual at the festive season, it was a time of spending for the purpose of giving the juveniles a happy time. The picture theatres were crowded and the shops were very busy.
On Tuesday the Eltham and Hawera council employees held their annual picnic at the Opunake beach, all spending a very enjoyable day. Some little stir was caused by the appearance of a couple of sharks in the breakers at the Opunake bay on Tuesday A local resident gave the sharks a reception with pea rifle bullets. It is reported a charge of alleged theft from the person will be preferred against a well-known young man.
The Opunake Federal Band, after playing.a programme of music on Christmas Eve. serenaded the residental area and were given a happy reception. The funds of the band was increased by about £2O. . ‘ About 200 motor vehicles were driven to the Opunake beach on Tuesday. The Eltham Salvation Army Band had an outing there.
