BAND PROGRAMME.

VISIT OF PONSONBY BOYS. The programme given by the Ponsonby Boys’ Brass Band attracted a large audience last night. The unfavorable weather conditions prevailing, however, had rendered it necessary to hold the recital in the Empire Theatre, instead of at Kawaroa Park, as at first arranged. The object of the organisation is the musical betterment of the boys of the district and the tour has been undertaken with a two-fold purpose, namely, to enable the boys to see various towns in the North Island and also with the idea of instilling the musical movement into the boys in the towns visited. The growth of the movement at Ponsonby is illustrated by the fact that in addition to the 30 players on tour there are 65 boys in training and 25 former members have graduated to the ranks of adult bands. Last night’s programme was a varied one, and under their conductor (Mr. Fred Lawn) the boys showed a pleasing appreciation of the various items they were called on to play, and generally gave a capable rendering of the music. The numbers included the test selection .“Austral.,” the march “Lyonia,” and the songs “Wyoming” and “Till We Meet Again.” The audience throughout showed a keen appreciation of the boys* work. The receipts from the performance amounted to £l9. Yesterday afternoon the band generously played a programme of selections at the New Plymouth Public Hospital, and their visit was much enjoyed by patients and staff. To-day the band leaves New Plymouth by the mail train and will play at Inglewood this morning, and at Stratford to-night. Tomorrow they will give performances at Eltham and* Hawera, and on Saturday will play at Patea en route to Wanganui. During the course of the tour any persons who desire to help the band along can render assistance by offering to billet some of the boys, as the matter of accommodation is an important one.
