THE KARITANE DISASTER.
FURTHER DETAILS. By Telegraph.—Preas Assn.—Copyright Melbourne, Dec. 28. Captain Burch relates that the Ceduna was first to reach the scene of the Karitane’s disaster. She noticed the “Want assistance’’ signal after c the weather cleared, and approached the Karitane which was partly submerged. Captain Spain reported that she had struck the forefoot and stove in the forehold, which was flooded. When beached the afterhold and engine-room were dry. Captain Bdrch adds that the fog belt seemed to settle at some distance, and Deal Island had all the appearance of the mainland. 'Reports vary respecting salvage. The Herald states that the vessel is in a favorable position between the boulders and in deep water. The Telegraph says the vessel is a total wreck and that if southerly weather is experienced the steamer will break up.
