T.J.C. CHRISTMAS MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY’S (EVENTS. NGATA WINS NEW PLYMOUTH HANDICAP. The Taranaki .Toekey Club’s Christmas meeting was concluded yesterday in dull weather, though the rain fortunately held off till the racing had finished. The attendance, considering the postponement, was good, though it was not up to the second day of previous years. The course was slightly heavy, as the result of the previous night’s rain, but the racing throughout proved very interesting. The fields were good, there being a second dividend in each race, and the finishes close. The winners were , well concealed, the actual favorite only winning on two occasions. The starting was again good, whilst the judging was right up to the mark, indeed, all the officials are to be complimented on the way in which they carried out their duties. The totalisator handled £25,646 10s, as compared with £37,615 for the second day of last year, being a decrease of £i 1,969. The total for the meeting was £57.000 10s, as compared with £82.052 ■ last year, a decrease of £25.051 10s. Mr. Curry, stipendiary steward, had a • somewhat busy time, several enquiries ' being held. After the first race there ■ was an enquiry into the bumping of ' Dactylis by Kato at the bend, but after ■ bearing the evidence the explanation of , the rider was accepted. There was also ■ an enquiry at the conclusion g.’ the sec- ;
ond race regarding the reversal of form of Amber Tips, but a satisfactory explanation was given. Clarke was fined for not doing a preliminary in accordance with the rules. At the conclusion of the third race enquiry was wade into alleged improper action by one of the riders, but it was decided to take no action.
Both the open events went to out-' aiders, Amber Tips winning the six furlongs rate and Ngata the distance race. As on the first day the arrangements for the meeting were admirable a tribute to the organising ability of the secretary and his staff, whilst Mr Blewm.in must again be complimented on the appearance of the course and its appointment. 1 -’:. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa".) Concluding day at Awapunl. Equitable is worth watching to-day. Rude paid a great price in the Manawatu Cup. Tamatete made hacks of the opposition at Awapuni. The success of the Rude—Tamatete double hit the layers heavily. Malaga got the bookies out of trouble at Ellerslie. If Uncle Ned had won there would have been big winners and losers. Kyoto ran down his fences each day at Palmerston, and but for swerving across at the final obstacle each day would have won both races. Celmisia is a useful mare, but 10.0 stopped her on Tuesday It is about time the handicappers gave her a chance. Sycorax ran a great race in the Manawatu Cup, and the big race on the second day was a soft snap for her. She was in front passing the stand, and then cleared right out, winning with a lot in hand at the finish. Down the line there was a ton of money for Ngata yesterday, and the "full up” signal was quickly hoisted, the layers always treating Mr. Jas. Bull's "specials” with respect. What a wortderful mare Silver Link is! The writer adds his congratulations to those of the sporting public to Mr. A. Alexander on the mare's great Railway Handicap victory. Her record in that race is without equal, and her success was fully deserved. Another Taranaki owner to come iq for congratulations is Mr. J. R. Corrigan, who again won the Auckland Trotting Cup with the imported Man o’ War. Apparently it was a great race, and in a stirring finish Bryce’s horsemanship turned the scales in Man o’ War’s favor.
Martial Dawn let punters down heavily at Palmerston, but she ran a great race in the President’s Handicap on Tuesday, and was travelling faster than anything else at the finish of tiie President’s Handicap. She is a filly worth following, and the writer takes the risk of saying that she will develop into one of the best middle-distance handicai> performers in the Dominion. Alan McDonald was seen to advantage on Ore Ore at Awapuni on Tuesday, and the same evening rushed through to Auckland to ride Rathlin in the Ponsonby Hurdles. He leaves again to-night for Palmerston, where he will ride Ore Ore again. The Signor gelding has improved out of sight, and covered the mile and three-quarters in 3min 14 3-ssec on Tuesday—a great gallop. Kilreid won like a champion on Monday, but was fractious at the post on the second daj, and had to be held by the assistant starter, eventually getting away badly. He ran a great race, but the handicap of a bad start was too much for him. Perhaps he will have better luck next start. Old Detroit begins too slowly to have much chance at Awapuni, but he came-from a long way back on the opening day and paid a good second dividend. On Tuesday he was chopped out at the start, and had to be hard ridden all the way, eventually running in behind the placed horses. "Charlie” Jenkins is riding with his old dash on the tracks at Bulls, and it is on the cards that he will be granted a license, in which case he will make his reappearance on Detroit in the Foxton Cup. Should he win he will come in for a great reception from his hosts of admirers in days gone by. Triboulet is a big, awkward, Splay-footed gelding by Kilbroney—Portland Lass, ‘ but he lias a great sweeping stride, and on his third and second at Awapuni showed himself to be a cut above the average. Provided he stands, he will win a good race shortly. Admiral Codrington, on the strength of his creditable second in the Manawatu Cup was sent out favorite for the President’s Handicap on Tuesday, but the fast pace set by Sycorax I broke him up, and after getting into second berth at the home bend be faded back to third at the finish. The veteran Snub cut an inglorious figure in the President's Handicap at Awapuni, tailing off early, and finishing down the straight. Farceur was a quiet tip for the Great Northern Foal Stakes, but once again he bad to lower his colors to the flying Epitaph, who equalled Mermin’s Imin 13 l-sscc, The recard is held by Biplane, who won in Imin 13 2- ssec In- 1916. H. Gray was not long in scoring a win after his ret. i from the Old Dart, and another New Zeaiander who has been out of the c» witty for a long time—Stanley Reid—also signalised his reappearance by riding a winner. Astinome returned her supporters over a score in the Awapuni Handicap on Tuesday, She was always with the leading division, and won nicely from the unlucky Barleycorn. The latter should be a good bet next start. Gazique, who was favorite, put in a nice run below the distance, but the lightweights made the pace too torrid for him, and he could only finish fourth. ,
