SUNSHINE FOR HOLIDAY.
RACES DRAW LARGE CROWD. LESS MONEY FOR TOTALISATOK. An overcast morning which greeted holiday makers yesterday developed into a day of sunshine, which insured the success of outdoor gatherings. Though a misty rain commenced towards evening it was at the most only a slight discomfort, as far as the day’s outing wan concerned. There was a large influx of visitors into New Plymouth, about 800 passengers being carried by the twb morning trains. The principal attraction was the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas mel ting, but there were also a large number of visitors to the seafront. The attendance at the racecourse was a very large one, and the traffic to and from the grounds was heavy. The work of controlling vehicular traffic was ably managed by the police and borough officials, and there were no accidents to record at the end of the day. Money passed through the totalisator showed a decline of nearly £13,000 compared with last year. The total for the day was £31,348, while at the previous Christmas meeting the amount handled on the first day was £44,337. According to police reports there was an absence of the undesirable element from the holiday gathering and generally the crowds were very orderly. Business will be resumed by retailers to-day after the Christmas holidays, and shopkeepers will observe a late night* on Saturday of this week (New Year’s Eve).
