CHESS.
CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The chess championship tournament has opened. Fourteen competitors are taking part as follows: Davies (Dunedin), Dunlop (Oamaru), Stevens (Christchurch), Severne (Nelson), Miller (Westport), Kel'ling, Connell, Hicks, Gyles (Wellington), Howard (Taumarunui), Grierson, Roberts, Pickett, Evans (Auckland). The first round commenced with the evening session and seven games were finished at one sitting. Results: Severne beat Howard, Davis beat Stevens, Grierson beat Roberts.
