Detective Cummings, who distinguished himself in the Thorn and Gunn murder cases, has been promoted to the rank of chief detective as from the first of this month.
Colonel Campbell, Secretary to the Treasury, has been appointed Controller and Auditor-General in place of Colonel R. J. Collins.
News has bjuen received in Wellington of the death at Napier of Mr. E. B. Nation, until recently head accountant for Levin and Co., at Wellington. He joined the service of Levin and Co., some 40 years ago. A cable from Washington says Sir John Salmond, New Zealand delegate ar the Conference, lectures at the Harvard Law School on January 7. The invitation is considered a high honor. He will also .lecture to the .State Bar Association at New York.
Mr. 0. J. Herrick, of Vogeltown, left for Christchurch by the mail train yesterday morning, having received advice that his brother had died from injuries received as the result of an accident at Tai Tapu.
