WET BOXING DAY.
HOLIDAY FIXTURES UPSET. THE RACES POSTPONED. The weather held fine throughout the holiday week-end till yesterday morning, when heavy rain set in, upsetting all outdoor fixtures, and completely spoiling the Boxing Day holiday for many hundreds of people throughout the province. The most inconvenience was caused to the sports loving public, owing to the postponement of the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club Christmas meeting, which the stewards, at a meeting held about 10, a.m., decided should be deferred till today, the second day’s races to take place to-morrow. This proved disappointing to a large crowd who had journeyed in to town by motor and train, but they accepted the situation in a sportsmanlike way, realising that the club had acted in the best interests of all concerned.
Another important fixture to have been held yesterday is the sports gathering at Eltham. This, also, was postponed, and the event will now take place on Thursday. In addition to the many who made the trip into New Plymouth by car, the special train service was fully availed of. About 800 passengers were brought by the first train, and 300 by the second. Between four hundred and five hundred people returned by the 12.40 p.m. train. In view of the postponement an extension of the train arrangements has been secured, and it has been arranged that to-morrow the usual 4.20 p.m. train will be delayed to leave New Plymouth at 6 p.m.
