BREACHES OF THE LAW. FINES INFLICTED IN AUCKLAND Bv T^lcaraph.—l’rcas Association Auckland, Last Night. The first prosecutions instituted by the Auckland City Council in connection with the health precautions campaign were before Mr. Poynton, 8.M., to-day. There were in all nine cases. Eight were not defended, and the defendants were each fined, the remaining case being partly heard. The defendants included hotel licensees, hawkers, a firm of butchers, a Chinese fruiterer, and a dining room proprietress. The magistrate issued a warning that heavy penalties would be imposed for future breaches. A Chinese fruiterer, for failing to clean his yard, was fined £1 and costs. A local firm of butchers admitted having allowed waste matter to remain on their premises for such time as it would afford shelter for rats, and a fine of £1 and costs was imposed. For having allovzed refuse to be placed in unsuitable receptacles, an hotelkeeper was fined a similar amount. Street hawkers appeared for failing to protect fresh fruit from flies and dust, and were fined similar amounts.
