FUTURE OF EMPIRE.
GENERAL SMUTS’ VIEWS. By Telegraph.— Assn—coo’-right. Capetown, Dec. 20. Speaking at the opening of the Natal Provincial Congress of the South African Party, General Smuts referred to the Washington Conference. He said that, having secured the right of the Dominion to its own representation, m future there would be no question about its status at all. The iducement to tliQ Dominions to cut the painter and to become republics had absolutely been removed. Ireland was now being add.id to the list of Dominions. This entirely refuted the idea of the dissolution or the Empire voiced on the Continent lately. Ireland had been the Achilles 3 heel of the Empire, but there was no sign of weakness now and they looked forward to a brilliaht future for the Empire. He felt that a change in the tide had come for the human kind. Next year would be a year of progress and prosperity. He emphasised the seriousness of the Indian situation in South Africa and uro-ed that they must find a solution which would save the Empire from serious injury.
