Tiie arrest of Boppe, a wealthy exinspector of forests in the Nancy district, reveals incredible treatment of a self-sacrificing wife, who is a niece of M. Mauride Barres, the novelist. Boppe, for the sake of an intrigue with a girl, when stationed at Epin-.il during the war, twice conspired to poison his wife under the guise of affection, with cyanide The plot was revealed by the children, but the wife forgave him. Later Boppe shot her twice in bed with a revolver, simulating suicidal appearances. The wife was operated upon, but was permanently disfigured. She again forgave her husband and endorsed the story that she had attempted suicide. Later, on learning that Bopne meant to abscond abroad with his mistress, his wife denounced him and secured his arrest.
