FITZROY FIRE BRIGADE.
SUGGESTED ABOLITION. MEETING OF PROTEST. In his annual report to the ■ New Jrtjb mouth Fire Board, Inspector Hugo recommended the abolition of the Fitzroy Fire Brigade, and to discuss the position arising from this recommendation a meeting of Fitzroy ratepayers was held last night, Mr. A. Foote presiding. 1 It was pointed out that the brigade was launched eighteen years ago, and was maintained by voluntary subscription until taken over by the Fire Board. The brigade was still composed of volunteer members. The meeting was of opinion that it was unjust to the men and to the district to suggest disbanding the brigade or curtailing its activities in any way, and the following motion, was carried: “That this meeting of Fitzroy ratepayers, having in view the fact that the brigade was considered necessary eighteen years ago, that it was executed and maintained by public subscription until controlled by the Fire Board, that the population has increased four-fold, and the useful purpose served the brigade during all these years, views with alarm any suggestion to disband the brigade or curtail its efficiency by limitation of membership, and urges the Fire Board to review its decision.” A copy of the resolution is to be forwarded to the Fire Board and the Borough Council, and a petition is to be circulated within the next few days in support of the retention of the brigade. A sub-committee was set up to make preliminary arrangements.
