IRONWORKS CLOSING.
BIG NUMBER UNEMPLOYED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Sydney, Dec. 21. The whole of the employees of the Clyde Engineering Works, totalling 1500, have been dismissed and the works are closing, owing to the effect of the basic wage. The manager explained that a contract wa-s undertaken for the construction of 300 locomotives for £2 500,000. The first thirty had been completed at a cost considerably in excess of the estimate and they were unable to continue unless the Government came to their assistance. Received Dec. 21, 9.40 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 21. It is estimated, as a result of the dismissals.. over 5000 iron-workers will be rendered idle after Friday next, as, in addition to the Clyde several other works have served notices on the men. The leaders of the iron trade wo.kers are of opinion that the division to close down the various works is more to defeat the Federal award, which provides for payment for the Christmas holidays.
