TARIFF PROPOSALS.
NEGOTIATIONS WITH AUSTRALIA > NO AGREEMENT YET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Amendments to the Customs Bill were introduced in the House this afternoon by Governor’s message. The Hon. W. D. Stewart said the amendments were of a purely technical nature. In reply to Mr. T. M. Walford (Leader of the Opposition), the Minister said the negotiations with Australia for a reciprocal tariff had not yet reached finality. He had hoped the Premier would be able to make a statement to the House before the Christmas adjournment, but that was not now possible. He understood Australia was anxious to reach some temporary agreement before January 1. Mr. Wilford: "Don’t rush it.”
Mr. Stewart: "No, we are not rushing it.” He wanted to make it clear that it was not proposed, as rumored, to offer Australia our British preferential tariff in earchange for theirs. If the Bill was passed by the House to-day and signed by the Governor-General to-morrow it would be necessary to issue an Order-in-Council putting Australia on the general tariff until an agreement was reached. The amendments were agreed to. Later the amendments were agreed to by the Legislative Council.
