SCRATCHING. Pure Laziness has been scratched for the Taranaki Christmas Handicap. A GREAT HORSEMAN. H. GRAY RETURNS. HIS EXPERIENCES IN ENGLAND. After an eight months’ absence from New Zealand, Hector Gray, the most successful horseman that this country has produced, returned to his native land by the Marama on Tuesday. Gray looks fit and well, and weighs about eight stone, which indicates that he kept his poundage down prettj’ well since leaving England. This he ata ny liara work on the way over, the exercises including i stoking and medicine ball. Crossing the Atlantic he was taken very ill, and the doctors found that he was in a bad way with ptomaine poisoning. However, he pulled through, and is now in the best of health. He left for Auckland by Tuesday night’s Main Trunk train, and will be on the track riding work at Ellerslie on Thursday morning. His stay in New Zealand will be brief, as he is booked up to sail on his return to England by the Tahiti on February 5. Speaking of his experiences in England, Gray said that he had every reason to be satisfied. He had been well treated bj’ the people there, and his observations led him ' to the conclusion that if the Home people took a fancy to a good jockey they made a . . king of him. He was successful in the first race he rode in in England, and during his ■ of something ovsr five months he rod®
23 winners. His percentage was about one win in three rides. The English horses, he says, are wonderfully good, and far above the New Zealand thoroughbreds. As an instance, he mentions that a horse was imported into Australia from England recently, and there won one of the biggest races in the Commonwealth, was regarded before leaving Home as a good selling plater. Orpheus, ne declares to be the best horse in the world. I Racing riding at Home is very clean and the courses are very good. Clubs were compelled, to have a straight mile on their courses, and they went in more for longdistance events that we did here. One race he rode in there was over a course' of two miles and three-quarters. Gray won it nn Spearwort. During the running of many of the races the horses disappeared from the sight of the public. Over there they would not allow a horse to be knocked about in a race, and a thing that was very noticeable was that in most of ths handicaps the minimum was 7.2, Instead of G. 7 as in New Zealand. There were only one or two special races in which the low minimum was kept to. Before leaving England Gray signed up to ride again for Sir Hugo Cunliffe Owen at a big four-figure retainer. In a letter covering the agreement, the English owner wrote to Gray saying, among other compliment ary things: “Our association has been very pleasant, and I have been entirely pleased and satisfied with all that you have done for me.” Gray won £ll,OOO in stakes for Sir Hugo, and £BOOO for Lady Cunliffe Owen—£l9,ooo in all. Among the valuable presents that his patron gave him was a (motor-car. When on the Marama on the way across to New’ Zealand, Gray received offers of rides while he is here, and already he has several engagements to fulfil during his brief stay. He will be on Sasanof in the Auckland Cup, on Absurduni in the Railway Handicap, will ride Aureate in the Great Northern Derby, and Highland in the events the Lowry two-year-old is started in. Gray will also ride at the Wellington Cup meeting. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Stratford acceptances to-night. Taranaki races on Monday and Tuesday. Royal Star reached Auckland at the beginning of the week. Tolerance has gone into A. Asprey's stable at Ellerslie. Foo Chow was doing great work before being sent up for the Auckland Cup. Mark Time has lightened up very much, and would be benefited by a spell. Aureate will be ridden in the Auckland Cup by the apprentice rider H. Wiggins. Commission, who broke his duck at Taumarunui, is an Austral lan-brqd gelding by Gunpowder—Pampero. Farceur is said to be better over six furlongs than over ’ shorter distances, and some good judges consider he will trouble Epitaph in the Northern Foal Stakes. The Auckland trainer E. Pope took six horses to Taumarunui, and they registered four firsts and two seconds. Not a bad afternoon’s work! Mr. W. G. Stead will probably have Sasanof, Absurdum, Radiant Light, Truthful, Sir Otway, and Poet racing at Ellerslie. Sir Otway has been gelded since he last sported silk. Greenstead was responsible for a fine performance when he won the Flying at Rosehill on December 10. Carrying 10.5, and giving away from 13 to 541bs. weight, he beat nineteen others in Imin 13%sec. The next Wellington Cup will be worth 2000 sovs., and the Douro Hack Cup 750 sovs. It happened at a country (meeting in New South Wales. A Sydney jockey rode One winner, a second and two thirds in the first four races. He was not engaged for the Last race, and a. local owner engaged him to ride his mare. The jockey dressed in the room, weighed in, and brought out a gold watch ■ and chain, and £7O for the owner to hold until after the race. When the mare drifted from threes to sixes, the owner, who had already backed her, became alarmed. Just before going to the post, he questioned the jockey, but he assured him he was a trier. '•You think she’ll win?” he asked. “Yes,” ?:e replied, “the mare’s a certainty.” “I thought so,” the owner whispered, “so I backed her and put your £7O on as well.” The Sydney crack was caught, and the mare duly won by two lengths. Several contemporaries repeat the false statement that Con Reed will be on Foo Chow in the Auckland Cup. George Young will be found in the saddle on the day.
