SCHOOLS BREAK-UP.
PEMBROKE ROAD. Friday night was the first occasion for close on ten years that prizes were presented to the pupils of the Pembroke Road School for progress made during the year. There was a large attendance of parents friends, and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by young and old. Mrs. Cuthbert presided, and distributed the prizes, being assisted by the teacher, Miss Barnes, who has accomplished excellent work with her charges, and is to be congratulated. The flne tone of the school of late has created a distinctly favoraote impression. The committee and the residents of the district provided a dainty repast for the children, and, needless to say, it was done full justice to by the youngsters. A nice concert programme was presented by the chifcren, whose performances reflected great credit upon the teachers. Miss Barnes and Miss Hutchinson. The committee desire to thank all who assisted in any way in giving the children an enjoyable time. The following items were given :—Chorus, '•Blowing Bubbles.” “Britannia's -Tolly Jack Tars” (song), Evelyn, Maisie, Dorothy and Mavis Gray. Jack Hutchinson, Albert Davidson, Stanley McCracken and Norman Rogers; recitation, “Ti e Clock Work Mouse,” Maisie Gold, Mavis and Dorothy Gray; “Good-night,” song by eight tiny tots; “The Tramps,” song and dialogue, J. Hutchinson, S. McCracken, and Norman Rogers. The prize-list was as follows: Merit prices.—Ronald Gould (dux), prize given by Mr. Liddell. Leonard Taylor (top boy standard 4). Albert Davidson (top boy standard 3). Mavis Gray (top girl standard 2). Maisie Gould (top girl standard 1). Mollie Gibson (top girl primer 3). Sadie Boyer (top girl primer 2). Bernard Miers. —Mr. Cuthbert's prize, given on vote of his schoolmates. Evelyn Gray.—Prize presented by Mrs. Cuthbert for the most diligent worker. Stanley McCracken.—Mr. E. Aldridge’s prize for good conduct. Albert Davidson and Edna Goldup.—Presented by Miss Barnes for full attendance. Other prizes were awarded as follows: Bernard Miers (standard 6) ; Maisie Gray (standard 5) ; Jack Hutchinson. MANGOREI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Upper Mangorei held their annual school concert on Thursday, December 15, and it was a great success, the attendance being quite a record. The scholars provided the entertainment and reflected great credit on their teacher. Miss D.' Brown. The following programme was given:—Overture. Miss Stanton; song. “The Brown Thrush” and “The Flag Song.” juniors: recitation, “Flo’s Letter,” Elfrida Knauf: solo and chorus, “Don’t Your Mother Love You”; action song, “Three Mice,” juniors; characters from America, boys; recitation, “Little Boy Blue,” Dorothy Pearce; song, “Six Jolly Tars”; dialogue in song, "Whore Are You Coing to My Pretty ( Maid?"; dramatic scene, “Morning Callers”; negro song, “Everybody Calls Me Honey”; | song, “Lullaby”; recitation, “The Mushroom' Girl,” Onia Flay; Maori song, “Two in a Cause”; humorous song, “Ten Little Nigger Boys”; song, “From Here to Shanghai’ ; recitation, “A Stray Child,” Gladys Pearce;
recitation. “The Mistletoe Bough," Merinda Richard* The concert was concluded by a delightful cantata entitled, “Captain Soot and ?ke Fairies.” Although highly mirth provoking, this little musical comedy contained a moral, inculcating purity. At this stage the chairman (Mr. A. Balsam) distributed the prizes to a large number of beaming faced children. On behalf of the scholars the two senior girls (Miss Hilda Wadsworth and Miss Merinda Richards) presented their teacher with a beautiful salad bowl as a token of their appreciation of her services and as a Christmas present. Miss Brown suitably acknowledged the gift. Attendance certificates were presented to Doris Spencer, George Spencer and Trevor Pitt. Refreshments were handed round, and the schoolroom was cleared for dancing, which was kept up for several hours to music provided bv Miss Doris and Joy Brown, Miss Lethbridge, and Mr. W. F. Mcldrum. Mr. Los Brown acted as M.C. in his usual happy manner.
