END OF SCHOOL YEAR.
PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES. HILLSBOROUGH. On Wednesday evening the Hillsborough Hall was filled to the overflowing on the occasion of the annual school concert and prize-giving ceremony. The chair was occupied by Mr. H. C. Sampson (chairman of committee), who, In a brief address, said that this year’s report on the school by the inspector was the most favorable that had yet been received, and extended the congratulations of the committee to Miss O’Brien (headmistress) and her assistant, Miss Mouat. It was most gratifying and creditable to learn that each pupil presented for the proficiency examination had passed with a high percentage. (Applause.) Prior to the presentation of prizes an excellent programme of songs and recitations was gone through in a manner that reflected the highest credit upon the pupils and their teachers, Miss O’Brien (seniors) and Miss Mouat (juniors). The fact that the door takings totalled the substantial sum of £l6 gave ample proof that the residents of the district, gave their hearty support. At the conclusion of the concert Mr. P. J. White (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board) presented the prizes, and prior to doing so heartily congratulated the Hillsborough School upon the very successful year’s work, which reflected great credit upon the teachers. First in Class: Standard 5, Sidney Sampson; standard 4, Douglas Calvert; standard 3, Dan Brosnan; standard 2, Selwyn Thompson; standard 1, Eric Calvert; primer 3, Clyde Marsh; primer 2, Violet Stanley. Diligence.—Standard 6, Jack Hawkings; standard 5, Winnie Hall; standard 4, George Stanley and George Marsh; standard 3, Mary Cliff and Dudley Thompson; standard 2, Norman Parker; standard 1, Charlotte Sampson. Essay.—Standards 5 and 6, Cyril Calvert; standards 3 and 4, Douglas Calvert; standards 1 and 2, Ray Anderson. Drawing.—Standards 5 and 6, Don Withers; standards 3 and 4, Hilda Brosnan; standard . 2, Selwyn Thompson; standard 1, Eric Calvert. OMATA. \ Parents and others from all parts of the district filled the Omata Hall on Thursday even'ng, the o. being the annual concert. and distribute n of prizes. Mr. L. McHardie (schoolmaster) and Miss Wells (assistant) were complimented on the programme submitted. The chairman congratulated Mr. L. McHardie on the excellent standard secured by tl*e scholars in proficiency, the headmaster suitably acknowledging the compliment. At -the close of the concert the distribution of Izes followed. There were three special
prizes, a medal being awarded to Master Stanley Jury for regular attendance and never being late during 8 years and 7 months at school, Willie Frost for five years, and Olive Krpnk six years. The other prizes were: Dux of School: Stanley Andrews. Standard 6: Stanley Andrews 1, Charlie Morris 2, Olive Kronk 3. Standard 5: Joe Begg 1, Bonald Sanger 2, Ken Vickers 3. Standard 4: Desmond Hughes 1, Bert Seamark 2, Harry Bayley 3. Standard 3.—Stanley Morris 1, Elsie Cowling 2, Ruth Luxton 3. Standard 2.—Rita Begg 1, Norman Bayley 2, Mabel Stewart 3. Standard I.—. George Duke 1, Stan Wellington 2, Jack Bayley 3. After light and tasty refreshments had been handed round the children retired, and, the floor being cleared, the remainder of the evening and portion of the morning were spent in dancing, one and all voting the outing lhe event of the year.
