KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The breaking-up ceremony and prizegiving at the local school took place on Thursday afternoon. Seats were placed on the school tennis lawn, and there was a representative gathering of parents. Mr. Ward, chairman of the school committee, before presenting the prizes, called upon Mr. D. Malone, chairman of the Kaponga branch of the Farmers’ Union, to address the pupils in connection with the root-growing and calfrearing competitions. Mr. Malone thanked the chairman for giving him the opportunity of being present. He had a pleasing duty ;to perform, that of presenting the prizes won in connection with last year’s competition. The first prize ( £2) was won by Rita Swadlihg, the second ( £1) by Erold Doyle, and the 3rd (10/-) by Clennell Kehely. Mr. Malone said that next year he hoped to see large entries in the various competitions, assuring the children that their efforts were being watched with interest by the Farmers’ Union. He would have much pleasure in presenting a calf from a first-class cow next year to be reared by and become the property of some child other than one living on a farm. Mr. Ward, before presenting the prizes, said that this would be the last time he appeared as chairman of the Kaponga Committee, as he was leaving the district. The teachers were to be congratulated on the condition of the school, more especially with regard to the tone of the pupils. He congratulated also those pupils who had been successful’ in gaining prizes. The unsuccessful ones, said Mr. Ward, should not be discouraged, but try harder next year. All the primer pupils received a picture book, while in the standards first, second, and third prizes were given to those with highest*marks at the annual examination. After the prizes had been distributed, lollies were given to the children and an enjoyable afternoon tea was handed round by the senior girls. The Kaponga children’s day school Bible class (non-sectarian) concluded its year’s work by holding a picnic in the Kaponga Domain on Friday last. The picnic was organised by the Rev. W. Avery (leader of the class), assisted by parents and friends of the children. A very enjoyable day was spent by the SO children present and a goodly number of adults. A cricket match, boys versus girls, resulted in a win for the former by 35 to 22. A team of eight girls drew with an equal number of boys at tug-of-war. Races were run for primers and standards. Lunch and afternoon tea were served by the mothers. Perfect picnic weather, ideal grounds, and willing helpers all tended to make the day a most enjoyable one.
