Lord Birkenhead, as guest of the American Luncheon Club, said the world could tint be saved without America’s timely help in war, and no nobler contribution was ever made by a civilised Power in the world’s history than America’s calling of the Disarmament Conference. Referring to the Irish quarrel, he said that, even at this moment, they did not know that the spectre had been laid. The road was still obscure, but they had done, more to banish the “last trench" misunderstanding than their predecessors had done during two centuries.
