STABBING AFFRAY
FIGHTING ON A STEAMER. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 17. A stabbing affray took place last levelling on the steamer Eastern Moon, in consequence of which Lewis Simunds, able seaman, received two wounds in the back, which necessitated his removal t-o the hospital. It appears that an argument arose and some crockery was thrown about during the disturbance. It is alleged that a member of the crew picked up a br&ul knife and stabbed Simunds twice in the small of the back. Someone promptly knocked out the assailant and he became a casualty too. A fireman was also hurt in the fracas, receiving injuries to his head. Dr. Corkhill attended the injured m-n. Simunds was able to walk from the steamer to the ambulance, but the other man had to be carried on a, stretcher. The fireman remained on the steamer. The man alleged to have caused the trouble was taken to the police station, as he was not thought to be very seriously injured, and was locked up on a charge of assault and causing actual bodily harm. Simunds is progressing favora oly.
