ALLEGED THEFT.
CHARGE AGAINST DEFENCE OFFICER. William Alfred Gustafson was charged at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday, on remand from Palmerston North, with having, on or before September 27, 1921, received, at Wanganui, a cheque for £5O in terms requiring him to pay the same to the Wanganui Regimental Band, and with having fraudulently converted it or its proceeds to his own use. Additional charges against him were: (1) That between June 22, 1921, and November 7, 1921, he did steal the sum of £193 15s lid, the property of the New Zealand Government; (2) that, at Hawera, on or about October 18, 1921, he did steal the sum of £2 2s, the property of the New Zealand Government; (3) that, at Hawera, on or about August 23, 1921, he did steal the sum of £lO, the property of the New Zealand Government. A remand was granted till Tuesday next, and on the application of Sergeant Henry the amount of Sail was reduced to two sureties of £l5O each and the accused in £lso.—Star.
