PERSONAL.

Mr. J. H. Quilliam was a passenger for Auckland by the Rarawa last night. Mr. Phil. R. Presants, the well known Wellington artist, is on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr. C. E. Matthews, fo/merly Con troller of Prisons, has been appointed Under-Secretary of in succession to Mr. Jordan.

The Queen, Princess, Mary and Lord Lascelles are visiting the Earl of Harewood. The programme includes, at t?ie Queen’s suggestion, a procession in Leeds, near which town the Earl resides. His Honor, Mr. Justice Reed, who has presided at the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court- in New Plymouth, which concluded yesterday, leaves this morning for Auckland. A London cable records the death of General Sir John Nixon, who commanded the Expeditionary Force in Mesopotamia from April, 1915, to January, 1-916.

Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, Minister for Customs in the Reform Government as at first constituted in New Zealand,-was in the field as one of three candidates for the Hornsey sect which became vacant through the death of Mr. Kennedy Jones. Viscount Ednam, son of the Earl of Dudley, was elected. At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington yesterday, the chairman announced that with the' object of making an inspection of the bank’s London office, Mr. Gibbs, the chief auditor, will leave for London in February next. During his absence Mr. R. A. Holmes will act as his locum 1 enems.—Press Assn. Miss M. K. Hair, who has been assistant at the Frank ley Road School for the past nine years, was at yesterday’s •breaking-up ceremony presented by the pupils with a silver fruit dish, together with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Miss Hair suitably responded. In the Evening the residents of Frankley Road and district tendered Miss Hair a kitchen social in the school gymnasium, when there was a large gathering. Miss Hair was the recipient of a silver tea set. Officers from the New Plymouth Post and Telegraph Department, who are moving other towns on promotion were farewelled in the course of a function held last night in honor of Mr. H. 15. Fookes (superintendent of the Telegraph Office), who is retiring from the service. The list of promotions is, Mr. C. J. Craddock (money order department) To Masterton, Mr. G. M. Gilbert (telegraph) to be postmaster at Kaitangata. Mr. A. Knapp (counter), Hastings. Each officer was the recipient of a presentation, best wishes being accorded to them on their advancement, and the hope was expressed that they would have a happy time in their new where and would achieve further promotion later. The occasion was also t-aken to welcome Mr. J. Courtenay, ox Auckland, who has been appointed supervisor in the mail room.
