A London cablegram states that Senator G. F. Pearce, Australian representative at the Washington Conference, has been created a Privy Councillor. A Christchurch message reports the death of Mr. Thomas Chamberlain Field, of Field and Boyds, grain merchants. He was closely associated for years with the Y.M.C.A. and the Y.W.C.A.
Miss Rosina Buckman, the gifted New. Zealand prima donna, and her husband, Mr. Maurice D’Oiseley, a tenor of repute, are to visit New Zealand about the middle of next year. Misses Pitcaithly, Boyde, and Lindop, who are severing their connectictfi with the West End School after two years* probationary period, were the of presentations at the school breakipgup ceremony last night. An Ottawa cablegram states that Miss Elspeth Rogers, daughter of a deceased British Columbia sugar millionaire, announces her engagement to Jan Cherniavsky, the pianist. Miss Rogers’ elder sister is the wife of Mischel Cherniavsky.
Mr. F. A. Tyrer, who has retired from the position of headmaster of tjie Stratford District High School, after thirty years’ service, was tendered a public farewell at the Stratford Town Hall last night. From the old pupils of the school Mr. Tyrer received a cheque for £lOO and an illuminated address, while he was also presented with an illuminated address from the citizens of Stratford and district. Miss M. Bullard, who has been connected with the West (End Sshool for some years, wus the recipient of a presentation at last night’s breaking-up ceremony prior to her approaching marriage. The presentation was made by Mr. J. S. S. Medley (chairman of the West End Committee), who referred to the esteem in which Miss Bullard held by her pupils and the regret which all would feel a-t her loss to the school These remarks were endorsed by th< headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans). Mist Bullard briefly responded. Mr. E. B. Hoskin, Who organised the recent concert held in connection with the West End School, was presented with a framed testimonial at the school breaking-up ceremony last night, by the chairman (Mr. J. S. S. Medley), who referred to the good work done by Mr, Hoskin in connection with the organising. Reference was also made to the services rendered in this direction by Mr. T. Petty. Mr. A. F. Meldruin, LL.B. (N.Z.), B.C.L. (Oxon). was admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court o; New Zealand by His Honor Mr. Justice Hosking at Wellington on Tuesday. , Mr. Meldrum is a son of General Meldrum, now S.M. at Greymouth. While a student of Victoria College, he enlisted in 1914, and was with the Expeditionary Force in samoa. On returning to New Zealand he joined up with the Thirteenth. Reinforcement and was wounded at the Somme in 1916. He gained his commission ini 19>17, and served in the Palestine campaign until the cessation of hostilities in that area. Mr. Meldrum subsequently went to Oxford in terms of his Rhodes Scholarship awarded to him in 1916, and secured hia B.C.L. with honors from New College.
